Messi Turned Down Record $1.9 Billion Saudi Arabia Offer to Join Inter Miami
When Lionel Messi departed Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, few knew about the astronomical offer he walked away from. Former Al-Ittihad president Anmar Al Haili recently revealed that the Saudi club presented Messi with a jaw-dropping €1.4 billion ($1.9 billion CAD) contract—which the Argentine superstar declined.
That's not a typo. Nearly two billion Canadian dollars were on the table, and Messi politely passed.
According to Al Haili, the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner rejected the historic offer for a straightforward reason: his family's well-being. "I offered Messi €1.4bn, and he rejected such a high offer for the sake of his family, despite having convinced them," the former Al-Ittihad president disclosed.
Prioritizing Family Over Record Paycheque
The proposal came immediately after Messi's PSG contract expired. Al-Ittihad essentially presented him with a blank cheque, but the World Cup champion had different priorities beyond financial gain.
"He did not hesitate to refuse, because family is more important than money," Al Haili stated. Despite the rejection, the former chairman mentioned that Al-Ittihad's door remains open should Messi ever reconsider.
Rather than heading to Saudi Arabia, Messi opted for Inter Miami and Major League Soccer. While not quite matching the Saudi offer, his deal is still substantial—earning between €50-60 million ($68-82 million CAD) annually, plus equity stakes in revenue from Apple and Adidas partnerships, along with real estate investment opportunities in Miami.
Implications for Inter Miami's Future
Now 38, Messi recently committed his future to Inter Miami by extending his contract through 2028. He signed the renewal this past October, effectively ending speculation about a potential departure.
"It makes me very happy to continue here and carry on with this project," Messi told Inter Miami's official channels. He described playing at Miami Freedom Park as a dream come true.
For those following MLS betting markets, Messi's long-term commitment carries significant weight. His presence keeps Inter Miami among the championship favourites and continues attracting world-class talent to South Florida. Meanwhile, Al-Ittihad has assembled an impressive roster featuring Karim Benzema, N'Golo Kanté, and Fabinho, establishing themselves as Saudi Pro League title contenders.
The takeaway? Even the largest contract offer in football history couldn't sway Messi when weighed against quality of life and family considerations. Sometimes the best decision isn't measured in dollars and cents.
