South African Winger Thapelo Maseko Makes European Move to AEL Limassol on Loan
Thapelo Maseko is taking his talents to European football. The 22-year-old South African international has finalized a loan transfer to Cypriot club AEL Limassol, departing Mamelodi Sundowns on Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
The promising winger found himself on the outside looking in at Sundowns under manager Miguel Cardoso. His situation became increasingly complicated when the Brazilians bolstered their attacking options in January with the additions of Monnapule Saleng from Orlando Pirates and South American forward Brayan Leon.
The lack of opportunities was evident in his playing time this season—Maseko has accumulated just over 100 minutes of first-team action throughout the entire campaign. For a talent with his capabilities, that simply wasn't enough to continue his development.
Linking Up with Compatriot in Cyprus
AEL Limassol made the transfer official on Tuesday. Maseko will complete the remainder of the season in Cyprus, where he'll join forces with fellow South African international Luther Singh. The temporary deal extends through the end of the current campaign.
This move to Cyprus comes after previous interest from the Mediterranean island nation. Aris Limassol attempted to acquire his services at the beginning of the 2025-26 season, but that proposed transfer didn't materialize. Now Maseko gets his chance at European football with their cross-town rivals.
For those following the Betway Premiership, Maseko's exit reduces Sundowns' attacking depth as they pursue another league championship. That said, their recent transfer activity suggests the defending champions have adequate coverage in offensive positions.
World Cup Ambitions Fuel European Switch
Maseko was a member of the Bafana Bafana team that claimed bronze at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations held in Ivory Coast. However, he was left out of the squad for the 2025 tournament in Morocco—a disappointing exclusion for the young attacker.
With the FIFA World Cup scheduled for later this year, Maseko understands the importance of consistent match minutes to work his way back into national team consideration. This European loan spell could provide the platform he needs to catch the attention of the national team selectors.
The winger launched his professional career with the now-defunct SuperSport United, recording 34 appearances before transferring to Sundowns in 2023. Since joining the Pretoria-based giants, he's featured 45 times across domestic competitions and continental tournaments, including the CAF Champions League and African Football League—the latter of which Sundowns captured.
With seven international caps already to his name, Maseko is determined to add to that total. AEL Limassol expressed their enthusiasm about the signing, stating they're thrilled to have him represent the club in their distinctive blue and yellow kit through the end of the season.
