56 Teams Set to Battle for $670 CAD Prize Money in Nigeria's Premier Youth Tournament

Lagos, Nigeria is preparing to host something extraordinary. The Taiwo Afolabi U-17 Cup returns for its milestone 10th edition, featuring an unprecedented 56 teams competing for glory and significant prize money.

The Lagos State Grassroots Soccer Association has put together an impressive field of competitors. This year's tournament features 32 boys' squads and 24 girls' teams, establishing it as one of the most substantial youth competitions on Lagos' grassroots football calendar.

The financial incentives for these young athletes are quite substantial. Champions will pocket ₦400,000 (approximately $670 CAD) along with the trophy, while runners-up claim ₦300,000 (roughly $500 CAD). Third-place finishers earn ₦200,000 ($335 CAD), and the fourth-place team receives ₦100,000 ($168 CAD). These are considerable sums at the grassroots development level.

Tournament Schedule and Venues

Competition begins with preliminary rounds across two locations. Participating teams will face off at the Ojo Oniyun Sports Centre located in Ebute Metta and the Anthony Mini Stadium in Gbagada.

The championship final is scheduled for May 2, 2026, at the prestigious Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan. Adding significance to the occasion, long-time tournament benefactor Dr. Taiwo Afolabi has confirmed his attendance at the final, marking a decade of continuous support for the competition.

Pipeline to Professional Football

This competition extends beyond immediate results—it has established itself as a legitimate pathway to professional football, producing players that serious football followers and betting enthusiasts should monitor.

Afuka Abu, serving as LSGSA Assistant Secretary, articulates the tournament's impact clearly. "This competition has consistently delivered young players the framework, visibility, and discipline required to advance to elite levels," he stated.

The evidence speaks volumes. Former Golden Eaglets captain Samson Tijani has progressed to Dukla Prague. Soliu Afolabi secured a position with Slovan Liberec. Chijioke Light has represented Nigeria at both the WAFU Championship and Africa Women Cup of Nations. Ebenezer Ojo currently competes professionally in Norway's league system.
