Italian Legend Cristiana Girelli Makes NWSL Move to Bay FC

Bay FC has secured Italian international Cristiana Girelli on loan from Serie A powerhouse Juventus, with the deal running through August 2026. Girelli brings elite credentials to the NWSL. Italy's all-time leading scorer recently claimed the Serie A Women's top scorer award for 2024-25 and earned a Ballon d'Or nomination. Her resume includes 120 international appearances with 61 goals for the Azzurre, complemented by 250 career goals at the club level. These numbers demonstrate precisely the finishing ability Bay FC has been lacking.

"The NWSL for me has always been a league that I believe is one of the best in the world, maybe the best," Girelli shared with Sports Illustrated. The Italian forward expressed enthusiasm about the competitive nature of the American league and the passionate stadium environments.

Emotional Departure from Turin

For the 35-year-old striker, saying farewell to Juventus proved emotionally difficult. After eight seasons in the famous black and white stripes, where she captured six Serie A championships and cemented her legacy as a club icon, the decision weighed heavily on her mind. Supporters expressed surprise and disappointment when the transfer became public.

"It's as if I'm leaving the love of a lifetime," Girelli acknowledged. However, she recognizes that her playing days are finite. At this stage of her career, she felt compelled to experience a different league and test herself in a new environment before the opportunity passed.

Since this is strictly a loan arrangement, Girelli maintains her connection to Juventus. She's seeking fresh motivation and a new challenge while still competing at the elite level.

Girelli becomes the fourth Italian player to transfer from Serie A to the NWSL since last July. Sofia Cantore, Lisa Boattin, and Lucia Di Guglielmo previously made similar moves, and all have shared positive feedback about their experiences stateside.

This influx of Italian players to North America gained momentum following Italy's memorable run to the semi-finals at the UEFA Women's Euros. That tournament elevated the profile of Italian women's football internationally, attracting interest from top leagues worldwide.
