Laura Harvey Commits Long-Term to Seattle Reign FC With Contract Extension Through 2028
Laura Harvey is making her commitment to the Seattle Reign FC crystal clear. The club's head coach just purchased her first residence in Seattle this week, immediately following the signing of a contract extension that secures her services through the 2028 campaign.
While Harvey has called Seattle home for more than ten years, she's been dividing her time between the Pacific Northwest and Southern California with her partner during the NWSL off-seasons. Now 45 years old, she's establishing permanent roots in the Emerald City.
There's an interesting twist to Harvey's journey: her own father once told her that building a career in women's football was impossible. Growing up in England, she assumed she'd follow a traditional path as a physical education teacher who coached football recreationally, similar to her father's career. "It doesn't exist, so prepare yourself to be something else," he would remind her.
"Good job, you didn't listen to me!" is his message these days. They had that very conversation on Thursday as Harvey made her way to the Reign's headquarters in Renton to finalize her new contract.
Harvey's Departure and Triumphant Return
Harvey is beginning her 11th campaign coaching the Reign, although her tenure hasn't been uninterrupted. She guided the squad from their inaugural season through 2017, capturing three NWSL Coach of the Year honours during that span. She then departed for Utah Royals FC for reasons she's never completely explained publicly.
That move proved to be an error in judgment. "I woke up for three years regretting that decision," Harvey confessed. When the Reign coaching position became available again in July 2021, she jumped at the opportunity despite warnings from associates that circumstances had evolved.
Indeed, things had transformed significantly. A new ownership group was in place, and the roster featured just three returning players. However, Harvey believed the organization's core identity had remained intact. She's been at the helm since August 2021, steering the Reign to their third NWSL Shield in 2022 and a championship final appearance in 2023.
Constructing a Championship Contender
Despite being the NWSL's all-time leader in coaching victories, Harvey has yet to secure a championship title. That reality made her extension discussions last summer more intricate than a straightforward agreement.
The Reign placed 13th in the league standings in 2024 and experienced significant roster turnover. Club icon Megan Rapinoe retired following the 2023 season, while defender Lu Barnes concluded her career last autumn after establishing multiple NWSL records, including most appearances all-time with 252 matches.
Welsh midfielder Jess Fishlock now stands as the sole remaining original Reign player. She inked a one-year contract after stepping away from international competition. The encouraging development: the Reign are becoming younger and more talented.
Last campaign, the squad secured fifth place with a 10-7-9 record and regularly fielded six players aged 23 or younger in the starting eleven. Five current Reign athletes recently earned call-ups to the USWNT this month: defender Jordyn Bugg, goalkeeper Claudia Dickey, forward Maddie Dahlien, and midfielders Sam Meza and Sally Menti.
For those following NWSL betting markets, this youth movement could position the Reign as an intriguing value opportunity heading into 2025. Young squads can deliver inconsistent results, but they're also motivated and developing rapidly. General manager Lesle Gallimore emphasized their desire "to win now," not merely develop talent for future seasons.
The regular season commences March 15 when Seattle visits the Orlando Pride in Florida. With Harvey secured long-term and a young core accumulating international experience, the Reign could emerge as a dark horse candidate to exceed projections. Training camp begins next week, providing the first genuine glimpse of what this new chapter holds.
