Messi and Argentina No-Show: India and Singapore Friendlies Cancelled Without Explanation
Argentina committed to playing exhibition matches in both India and Singapore. Neither match took place. Currently, there's no indication these fixtures will ever be rescheduled.
The arrangement was unveiled in March 2025 amid considerable excitement — international banking powerhouse HSBC and Argentina's Football Association (AFA) jointly revealed that the reigning World Cup and Copa America champions would compete in India during October 2025 and Singapore in early 2026. AFA chief Claudio Tapia spoke of "international expansion." HSBC promoted "exclusive perks" for customers, including meet-and-greet opportunities and specially designed fan experiences. The initiative appeared to be a sophisticated commercial venture.
Nothing came to fruition.
Series of delays and radio silence
During the October 2025 FIFA international window, Argentina opted to face Venezuela and Puerto Rico — but in the United States, not India. The Kerala fixture, initially moved to November 2025 and subsequently to March 2026, was quietly scrapped. During that March period, Argentina instead welcomed Mauritania and Zambia to Buenos Aires. The Singapore match received zero official communication. Complete silence from all parties.
HSBC refused to provide comment and directed The Straits Times toward the AFA. The AFA ignored inquiries throughout a two-week period. On HSBC's Facebook post announcing the "landmark partnership," one supporter inquired whether Argentina would still visit. The response from another fan: "no sound."
That Facebook exchange represents the closest thing to an official statement available.
For supporters in Singapore and India who can't reasonably travel to North America for next summer's World Cup, or invest in following Messi's Inter Miami matches in Major League Soccer, these fixtures represented something exceptionally special: an opportunity to witness the greatest player of his generation perform locally. That opportunity has almost certainly vanished. Singapore's National Stadium — the sole venue in the nation appropriate for such a high-profile match — has no reservation during any remaining 2026 FIFA windows.
A recurring issue, not an isolated incident
It's important to note that Argentina visited Singapore in 2017 and still left fans without Messi. He participated in their victory over Brazil in Australia four days prior to the Singapore friendly, then passed through the city-state en route home to prepare for his wedding. Supporters who paid up to S$188 witnessed a Messi-less 6-0 victory over Singapore instead.
The India circumstances in late 2025 were more problematic. Messi did arrive — visiting Kolkata, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and New Delhi — but for a promotional tour rather than any competitive or exhibition football match. In Kolkata, the event deteriorated into pandemonium. Fans who spent 12,000 rupees felt deceived; they stormed the pitch, tore out plastic seating, and threw it. Messi departed after just 20 minutes when organizers had planned for an hour-long appearance. His remaining stops proceeded more smoothly, but the reputational harm was already inflicted.
Legal proceedings have now commenced. VID Music Group has launched fraud and breach of contract claims against Messi, the AFA, and sports executive Julian Marcos Kapelan. The lawsuit alleges Messi conspired to induce VID into agreements "under false pretences" and committed negligent misrepresentation. The AFA confronts breach of contract allegations connected to the October 2025 US friendlies and two proposed June 2026 fixtures. The accusations remain serious and unresolved.
- Argentina faced Venezuela and Puerto Rico in the United States during October 2025 — not India as publicly announced
- The Kerala fixture was postponed on two occasions and ultimately never played
- Singapore's match received no official communication and currently has no stadium booking
- Argentina's pre-World Cup calendar for June 2026 is already confirmed: Honduras (June 6) and Iceland (June 9), both in the United States
- The World Cup itself operates June 11 to July 19 throughout the United States, Canada, and Mexico
Argentina are the current world champions and strong favourites to advance deep into the 2026 tournament. Their betting odds confirm this status. However, the commercial machinery surrounding this squad — the commitments, the partnerships, the exhibition matches — appears increasingly disorganized. For anyone invested in related commercial ventures, or monitoring the AFA's dependability as a business partner, this pattern raises concerns.
"For those of us unable to travel to the Americas for the World Cup or to the United States to watch Messi play for Inter Miami, this would have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," stated Jeffrey Ang, a 30-year-old Singapore supporter. "Hopefully, they will honour their word and still come on a later date."
Considering everything currently known, that optimism appears misplaced.
